How To Clean Velvet On Furniture

How To Clean Velvet On Furniture
First, check the tag on the piece to see what kind of velvet
you’re dealing with: If it’s acetate, rayon, or silk, your velvet is too
delicate for a home cleaning. Have a professional clean it.

If your velvet is made with cotton or polyester,  a careful
application of a store-bought upholstery cleaner, such as Woolite or
Bissell should do the trick. Before you use any chemical on the
material, test it on an unobstructive section of the fabric to ensure that the
process will not affect the dye or pile. Use a soft sponge to avoid damaging the
pile.-Martha Stewart Omnimedia

What's Red and White, and Comfy All Over?

Mrs. Beksted's chair, "Before"
Mrs. Beksted's panel accent chair had been on quite a journey. Since the early 1970s, Mrs. B. can remember this chair in her mother's home, as part of a matching pair that she inherited and loves.

The original set, though in great shape, was a bit dated for Mrs. B.'s beautifully decorated home. She had a vision in mind to complete her tranquil guest room and was on the hunt for the perfect fabric to add that much needed "pop" of color.

Mrs. Beksted's chair, after refurbishing
We looked through many fabric books before she decided on this red and white Sunbrella material. The wood on the original chair had a yellow finish that didn't go with the bright white in the new material so we re-finished and painted the wood to match. The results? just take a look at these before and afters! I don't think Mrs. B could have chose a more perfect fabric or color to bring her room together. We are now working on the matching panel chair that will be going into another room.

... I'll keep you posted!

Automobile seats reupholstered by Young's
Are you thinking bout having your car seats re-done? First you will need to decide if you want cloth, vinyl or leather. Do you want to keep with the original design or do something custom? What about colors, piping and solid or two-tone?

If you have a classic car and want OEM (original) material, you should know that it can be a bit of a challenge to track down, depending on year, make and model of your car, and that OEM material can get expensive.

We are an authorized Katzkin dealer and installation facility. Katzkin has a ton of leather options and you can go online to www.katzkin.com and design your seats online then bring us that print out so we can get you a price quote and order your seat covers the same day. We always suggest you bring your car by so our highly trained techs can take a look at your seats and make suggestions on what may be best for them. We never charge for estimates and no appointment is necessary. If you have questions you can always give us a call 757.480.3660. We're happy to help!

Leather Sofa Makeover

Leather Sofa, "After"
Young's Upholstery recently spent some time getting to know a tufted leather sofa quite well. Our furniture upholster Debbie, or sometimes know as "Sofa Lady" did an amazing job bringing this sofa back to all its original glory.

What we had to do was a complete tear-down of the sofa bottom and arms. We used two new leather hides to re-cover the long bottom cushion, all the work is done by hand--Sofa Lady's hands.

Debbie had to fold the leather and work it into place to get the "tufted" look this sofa is known for. Getting all the tucks and buttons just right is more of an art than a science. All of the buttons were made here in the shop by cutting small circles out of the leather and using a button machine we press them over metal buttons to achieve a finished look. Debbie also put each one of the decorative nails in by hand. Once the upholstery side of the sofa was finished it was up to our leather guy to refinish and recondition the back of the leather sofa, with the bottom looking so good the back need a little TLC too! The finished sofa was delivered to a very happy Mrs Hess.
